Released in 1982, AutoCAD was the first CAD program to use a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI allowed an individual user to operate a computer program directly using graphics. The idea was to allow a user to see the interface without the need for a screen resolution of less than 640 x 480 pixels.

Unlike the older “CAD switcher” programs, which were based on the idea of multiple users using their own separate terminals to work on a single drawing or model, AutoCAD, along with other applications such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, moved users from terminal-based computing to a user-centered computing environment.

AutoCAD’s development began at the New England Regional Headquarters of the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, which was then owned by Steelcase, Inc. (now Steelcase). Steelcase was using the TOPS-20, which, at the time, was one of the few commercially available operating systems that included CAD capabilities.

Development of AutoCAD began in 1980 by Scott Simmer and Dick Harris, who were “tweaking the application to meet our needs.” Because of the lack of CAD software at the time, the company decided to build its own. The first version of AutoCAD was a command-line application with no user interface, and was primarily used by employees to design and process drawings at the New England headquarters. The software was developed with a version of the Open Systems Architect (OSA) interface, but was labeled “Special Use Application (S.U.A).”

The product’s name was derived from “AUTocad,” a combination of the names of the founders: Autodesk, the founders’ last name; and Autocad, the name of the initial company that owned and was selling the software. In 1982, a year after its introduction, the first AutoCAD release was the fourth version of the product, which was also the first version to include user interface capabilities.
